Teeth Whitening

A teeth whitening treatment uses hydrogen peroxide to bleach superficial stains on the teeth and restore them to their natural colour. We can offer a non-peroxide treatment, however the results are not as dramatic.

EXPECTATIONS

Yellow marks on the teeth are extrinsic and are usually the result of exposure to coloured foods, drinks and tobacco. These stains are usually the most responsive to a teeth whitening treatment.

Brown marks on the teeth may extended deeper into the enamel and are often a result of 'wear and tear' and age, or extended exposure to coloured food, drinks and tobacco. These marks may be targeted during a teeth whitening treatments, but are harder to lift than yellow marks. To effectively treat brown marks, further treatments may be required.

Grey marks on the teeth are intrinsic (inside the tooth) and usually are the result of trauma / nerve damage or long-term use of medications such as antibiotics. These stains will not be lifted during a standard teeth whitening treatment and will require a more extensive cosmetic dental restoration.

Teeth with a composite resin coating, capped teeth and veneers will not be whitened during a teeth whitening treatment and will need to be restored by a dentist to match the surrounding natural teeth.

FAQs

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A TEETH WHITENING TREATMENT?

You are eligible for teeth whitening if you are over 16 years of age, are not pregnant or breastfeeding and have good dental hygiene and no current dental conditions that require medical treatment.

DOES IT HURT?

No, not at all - in fact, many of our customers fall asleep during the treatment. The gel is cured with an LED Light and this process is completely painless. If the gel accidentally gets on the gums or lips, it can feel irritating - especially if it reaches any broken areas of skin (piercings, mouth injuries, sore teeth). However, this is temporary and only lasts a few minutes. We offer a gum barrier gel during treatment to avoid this happening.

We also offer a desensitising mouth rinse immediately following the treatment. However, if you are a person who suffers from tooth sensitivity, it is recommended to use a desensitising toothpaste following a teeth whitening treatment for a minimum of 2 weeks. Sensodyne works as a longer term solution, whereas Colegate Sensitive can have a more immediate effect but it is not prolonged. For the best results, we recommend alternating between these two toothpastes.

WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

You can expect a 1-hour treatment to whiten teeth 5-14 shades lighter. Results may last years, but it does depend on the amount of strongly coloured foods and drinks you consume, how often you smoke, and your age. You are welcome to book regular teeth whitening treatments if you desire.
